Hurricane Jeanne was the
second hurricane in 2004 to hit Florida's Atlantic coast. Like Frances
before her, she targeted the area between Melbourne and Ft. Pierce after
meandering around out over the Gulf Stream, picking up power.
While not as large as Frances, Jeanne proved to be a wind demon, bringing on a tropical gale that tore up many structures already weakened by Frances. Making a nighttime landfall, Jeanne was hard to photograph but proved exciting in any case when she almost tore the roof off the hotel where Jim was staying. During this time, Jim also was able to sample the northern half of the eye. As the eye came on shore, a deceptive calm settled over the area for almost forty minutes. Then, almost as suddenly as it appeared, it passed, the wind changed direction and came on with even more force. During an earlier drive through the area, the entrance to the hotel was lost in the driving rain as was a commercial HVAC unit that had blown off a nearby auto-parts store. Ramming this object, in the dark, in blinding rain and more or less lost proved not only to be exciting but also a case where the expense of a brush guard for the Jeep was proven worthwhile.
