Hurricane Ivan proved to be a very powerful storm and caused extensive damage to the Northern Gulf Coast between Mobile and the area surrounding Pensacola, FL. Fresh from chasing Frances the week before, Jim departed Tampa with Stuart Robinson from UKWeatherworld.co.uk. Arriving in the target area, they set about finding a hard cover parking garage near Mobile Bay.

Turning to the models and the radar image, they watched as Ivan came towards them, projected to run straight up the bay. This would have spelled catastrophe for Mobile as surge was projected to reach record highs. As many Gulf storms are want to do, however, Ivan made a sudden turn to the NE at the last moment. This spelled disaster for Pensacola, many of whose residents had not taken thorough preparations, thinking the storm would go to Mobile.

As is the case many times, people fail to see that A. The track is merely the projected path of the eye. B. A storm of this nature is hundreds of miles in circumference, and C. The eastern side of the storm is the worst side to be on, especially in terms of surge. When the storm made landfall just west of town at Gulf Shores, AL. Pensacola was severely damaged, especially the beach communities which were overrun by surge and surf that in some places reached 50ft in height.

It was one of the more destructive storms to ever strike the Gulf coast and left a chilling number of dead in it's wake. Most gruesome were  people who ignored mandatory evacuation orders and were subsequently caught in a deadly blender of raging seas awash with construction debris. As the storm came onshore at night, there was little if any chance to save oneself in the darkness amidst the churning waters.
