Hurricane Isabel boiled in off the Atlantic to strike Cape Hatteras in August of 2003. Freshly returned from Iraq, Jim felt that this would be an interesting event to go an see. It was his first hurricane as a chaser.

The night before landfall, he encountered a group of odd Englishmen huddled around weather apparatus. Introducing himself, he found that he had made the acquaintance of the chasers from UKWeatherworld.co.uk. Running amok with them the next day as the storm lashed Va Beach sealed his fate as a chaser and would lead to a number of UKWW chase adventures in the future.

The storm's arrival was a perfect daylight landfall and with the police openly declaring that they would not be responding during the event every sort of thrill seeker and beach freak was on hand. A circus atmosphere ensued, followed that night by a curfew crackdown.

Isabel also caused much destruction inland when it passed, spinning off a number of tornadoes, one of which almost struck his sister's house. Without power for over seven days,  they were thankful for all the preparedness supplies he had dumped off before heading out to the storm.
