After emerging off the Western coast of Africa as a line of thunderstorms, Tropical Wave 17 meanders across the Atlantic Ocean . On July 4th, 2005 it is upgraded and labeled as Tropical Invest 97L.

As it continues on its way, telltale signs of tropical storm formation increase. At 23:00 EST , The National Hurricane Center upgrades Invest 97L to Tropical Depression 4. By the following morning, TD 4 is re-named Tropical Strom Dennis, the fourth named storm of the 2005 Hurricane season. Storm Chasers and METS across the world sit up and take notice.

On July 7th, Tropical Storm Dennis becomes Hurricane Dennis with a projected landfall somewhere in the Gulf of Mexico . Initial forecasts call for a strengthening system, possibly category 4 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane scale.

Residents from Louisiana to Florida watch the daily track and prepare for the first major hit of the year. After their experience with Ivan only ten months before, they take this development very seriously.

As the panhandle boards up their windows, a small team representing www.UKWeatherWorld.co.uk, starts loading their 4 wheel drive. At 23:59 July 8th, Chase Team Dennis departs Virginia for Pensacola , FL.

The trip took them across six states, over 1,000 miles and straight into the teeth of a Category 4 landfall…
