Jim
watched Hurricane Katrina emerge off the coast of Africa as a simple
Invest. After watching it's troubled journey across the Atlantic,
surviving one brush with shear and dry air after another, he saw several
small bands of inflow develop just off Puerto Rico.
He posted a short message on UKWeatherworld.co.uk....."It's gonna hit south Florida as a CAT 1. If it brushes past into the GOM it's gonna explode." He was right, days ahead of the NHC. The Saturday before landfall, he headed south to Mobile, riding out the storm in a garage downtown. Then, when all other chasers had departed, he pushed into the aftermath and joined up with search and rescue crews out of Mobile, AL and New Orleans. During that time he ventured into areas and operations where other media was NOT PRESENT and saw a different picture from the one being painted on TV. Note: "Not Present" does not mean "Not Accessible" or privileged in some way, it merely means that media didn't bother to push into some parts of the town that Jim did. He had 4x4 and went where the water would allow, with others at times but many times alone as well. There was no part of the New Orleans Metropolitan area that was declared off limits to media. This was the policy then and continues to be the policy as announced by Mayor Nagin immediately after the event (and confirmed by a Federal Judge on Sept 9th in Dallas TX . CNN vs Michael Brown, DHC/FEMA).
